According to information provided by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), as a result of the armed aggression against Ukraine, starting from February 24, 2022,
4,8 million
Ukrainian children changed their place of residence.
Of these, 2,5 million children were relocated within Ukraine, while the rest were taken abroad.

The UNICEF’s analysis shows that the percentage of children living in poverty has almost doubled (from 43% to 82%). The situation for about 5,9 million displaced persons in Ukraine is critical.
According to UNICEF estimates,
about 1,5 million
children in Ukraine are at high risk of developing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems, which can have long-term consequences.
More than 800 medical institutions in Ukraine were damaged or destroyed due to shelling and airstrikes.

These attacks cause death and serious injury to patients, including children, as well as medical personnel, while limiting access to medical care. Thousands of children fleeing the war across the country do not receive vaccines to be protected against diseases such as poliomyelitis, measles, diphtheria and other dangerous, life-threatening diseases.

According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, as of February 2023, russians destroyed or damaged 1,702 schools and 1,069 kindergartens.
In total, 10% of Ukraine’s educational infrastructure was damaged by russian shelling.

According to the Head of the National Service for Social Protection of the Population, Vasyl Lutsyk, during 1 year of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the number of orphans increased to approximately 9,000. Among these children, many became practically orphaned because their parents are in captivity or are hostages of the russian occupation authorities.

On July 13, 2022, the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated that:
“russian authorities interrogated, detained, and forcibly deported to russia from 900,000 to 1.6 million Ukrainian citizens, including 260,000 children often to Far East isolated regions.”
In March 2023, the Minister of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, Iryna Vereshchuk, stated that about 16,000 children were abducted and taken to the territory of russia. The Minister also emphasised that such cases of forced removal of children can be recognised as a "crime of genocide" which is punishable according to the International Law (Article II of the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide)

According to information provided by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, as of June 1, 2023,

criminal proceedings related to crimes against sexual freedom and sexual integrity of children were registered. 541 of cases already went to court, and 240 people received sentences. More than 500 people were included into the Unified Register of those convicted of crimes against the sexual freedom and sexual integrity of minors.

Thanks to the efforts of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the prosecutors’ offices of Ukraine, as of June 1, 2023, the rights and interests of 8,608 children, most of whom were affected by the war, were protected. 4,033 indictments regarding the crimes against children were sent to the court, and 1,613 people were convicted.
